Silicon is a chemical element with the symbol Si and atomic number 14. Here are some interesting facts:

  • It is a hard, brittle crystalline solid with a blue-grey metallic luster, and is a tetravalent metalloid and semiconductor.
  • It was discovered and first isolated by Jöns Jacob Berzelius in 1823.
  • Its melting and boiling points of 1414 °C and 3265 °C, respectively, are the second highest among all the metalloids and nonmetals, being surpassed only by boron.
  • It is the second most abundant element in the Earth's crust (about 28% by mass), after oxygen.
  • The base material for silicon-based discrete components and integrated circuits is used in virtually all modern electronic equipment.
  • Due to its semiconducting properties, single-crystal silicon is perhaps the most important technological material of the last few decades—the "silicon era".
  • It serves as a photovoltaic, light-absorbing material in the manufacture of solar cells.
  • The majority of silicon solar cells are fabricated from silicon wafers, which may be either single-crystalline or multi-crystalline. Single-crystalline wafers typically have better material parameters but are also more expensive.
  • Usually grown as a large cylindrical ingot producing circular or semi-square solar cells.
  • The “World’s Roundest Object”, crafted by researchers at the Centre for Precision Optics to define the kilogram, was made out of a single crystal of silicon-28.
