Hafnium is a chemical element with the symbol Hf and atomic number 72. Here are some interesting facts:
- It was discovered and first isolated by Dirk Coster and George de Hevesy in 1922.
- It is a lustrous, silvery gray, tetravalent transition metal.
- It chemically resembles zirconium and is found in many zirconium minerals.
- Hafnium is named after Hafnia, the Latin name for Copenhagen, where it was discovered.
- The mixed carbide tantalum hafnium carbide (Ta4HfC5) possesses the highest melting point of any currently known compound, 4,263 K (3,990 °C; 7,214 °F). Recent supercomputer simulations suggest a hafnium alloy with a melting point of 4,400 K.
- The low abundance and difficult separation techniques necessary make it a scarce commodity.
