Thulium is a chemical element with the symbol Tm and atomic number 69. Here are some interesting facts:

  • It is the least abundant of the rare earth metals except for the radioactive promethium.
  • It is soft enough to be cut with a knife and slowly tarnishes in the air.
  • It has a bright silvery-gray luster.
  • Despite its high price and rarity, thulium is used as the radiation source in portable X-ray devices, and in some solid-state lasers.
  • It has no significant biological role and is not particularly toxic.
  • The element is never found in nature in pure form, but it is found in small quantities in minerals with other rare earth.
  • It's very difficult to make, we spend several hours just making one cube.

We used high purity thulium sheets (Tm/TREM: 99.99%, TREM: 99.95%) rolled by vacuum melting to make the cube with a polished finish. The whole process is very difficult, especially the smelting process. The liquid thulium evaporates easily during the smelting process and the thulium vapor will easily volatilize and then pollute the furnace. The thulium vapor will also condense into thulium powder and it spontaneously ignites when it contacts the air after the furnace is opened. We need to be extremely careful during the whole process.
